CHAPTER TWELVE

Julie shifted her weight from one combat boot to the other, dispelling the last of the pins and needles that had built up in her left hip from sitting on the cramped PMA bus since the crack of dawn. They’d left the barracks at four in the morning, driven to the 110th Street Bridge portal, and then through Avalon and into endless miles of countryside before reaching a familiar stand of towering trees the size of redwoods. They were near the Eyrie, home of the griffins.

She stopped fidgeting as Sergeant Droppelheimer turned around and strode past the ranks of recruits, his eyes flashing over them. Standing sharply at attention, Julie kept her chin up, trying not to stare at Droppelheimer as he glanced at her. Had he read her file? Did he think she was a wildcard because of what the Moirai said yesterday?

Droppelheimer stopped, standing in the shadows of the streets, and fixed them all with a stern glare. “Recruits!” he barked.

“Sir, yes, sir!” the recruits chorused.

“Your physical assessment begins today.” Droppelheimer folded his sculpted arms. “It will continue for the next two days. First, you will be tested on the most grueling assault course in Avalon. It will strain you to your limits, but I expect you to break through them. Understood?”

“Sir, yes, sir!” the recruits yelled back.

“The second part of the assessment begins directly after the assault course. You will not be under any supervision. You will be on your own,” Droppelheimer barked. “You will have only basic equipment, and you will be expected to cross the forest by sundown tomorrow. For this task, you will be divided into teams. You will only succeed if you work together and draw on natural resources and your orb knowledge. Understood?”

“Sir, yes, sir!”

“Very good!” Droppelheimer growled. “We will split you into pairs for the assault course. Turn to the recruit on your left. That is your buddy. You will not cross this course without your buddy. You will not leave your buddy behind. Am I clear?”

“Sir, yes, sir!”

Julie turned to her left, and relief rushed through her at the sight of Jae. She could hear Korin grumbling behind her about being paired with Raven. A smile flickered across Jae’s face.

The recruits were sent onto the course pair by pair at staggered intervals. From the starting line, Julie watched the first pair, Korin and Raven, head onto the course. The foliage was so thick that she could only see the first part of the course: a series of toadstool fairy rings in pairs like tires on a human obstacle course. With their hands clasped behind their heads, Korin and Raven ran through them, setting their feet carefully between the mushrooms.

“Go, Korin, go!” Julie muttered. The dwarf’s short legs gave her difficulty. She gasped with effort, stretching to her maximum to reach each ring.

“No!” Jae exclaimed.

Halfway through the rings, the toe of Korin’s combat boot grazed the top of one of the toadstools. It burst open, and golden fairy dust exploded all over Korin.
